What Is IndexNow? The Instant Indexing Protocol Bing Uses (2026)

October 5, 2026 · 9 min read

For years, getting a page into a search engine meant publishing it and waiting — sometimes days — for a crawler to stumble on it. IndexNow flips that. You tell the engine the moment a URL is new or changed, and it comes to crawl almost immediately. Here's exactly what IndexNow is, which engines use it, and how to put it to work in 2026.

What IndexNow actually is

IndexNow is a free, open protocol for instant indexing. Instead of hoping a crawler discovers your page, you send a tiny notification — a "ping" — that says: this URL just changed, come crawl it now. Submit once, and every search engine that supports the protocol receives it at the same time.

The one-line version

IndexNow turns indexing from “publish and pray a crawler finds it” into “publish and notify the crawler instantly.” It is push, not pull.

Which engines use IndexNow — and who doesn't

This is the single most important thing to understand, because it decides your whole strategy:

One IndexNow ping → every participating search engine You submit 1 URL, 1 ping Key verified proves you own it Bing Yandex Seznam Naver IndexNow is an open protocol. Google does NOT use it — Google indexing needs a separate crawl signal.

1ping reaches them all
0engines = Google

Bing is the big one — it co-created IndexNow and indexes submissions aggressively. Yandex, Seznam and Naver also participate. Google does not. Google ran a test and chose not to adopt it, so IndexNow does nothing for your Google rankings. For Google you still need a separate crawl signal — see fast Google indexing.

The hidden multiplier: Yahoo, DuckDuckGo & more

Yahoo Search, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia and AOL all pull their results from Bing’s index. So when you get a URL indexed on Bing, you are effectively indexed across Yahoo and DuckDuckGo too — one IndexNow submission, four-plus search engines. Add Bing-powered AI search (Copilot, ChatGPT) and a single Bing index reaches a huge slice of non-Google search.

How IndexNow works, step by step

  1. You generate a key — a random string — and host a small text file with it at your domain root. This proves you own the site.
  2. You submit a URL (or a batch) to the IndexNow endpoint, along with your key.
  3. The engine verifies the key by fetching your key file, confirming the request is legitimate.
  4. The crawler visits your page and decides whether to index it — based on quality, exactly like Google.
IndexNow controls discovery — how fast the crawler arrives. It does not control the index decision. No protocol can force any engine to keep a thin page.

How fast does IndexNow actually index?

On Bing, IndexNow is genuinely fast. With a signal dispatched the instant you submit, this is the realistic timeline:

Bing indexing timeline with IndexMyLink t = 0s Link submittedsignals sent to crawlers t ≈ 5 min–4 hrs Crawler visitsthe page t ≈ 1–24 hrs Page showsINDEXED on Bing Signals dispatch the instant you submit. Bing is typically faster to crawl and index than Google.

Crawlers typically hit the page within 5 minutes to 4 hours, and the URL shows as indexed on Bing within 1 to 24 hours — far quicker than Google's hours-to-days norm.

How to use IndexNow without writing code

You can implement IndexNow yourself: generate a key, host the key file, and write a script that pings the API on every publish. That works for your own sites if you have a developer. The faster path for most people — and the only path for links you don't own — is a hosted tool. IndexMyLink handles the keys, verification and dispatch for you: paste up to 100 URLs, click submit, and each is pushed to Bing's crawl pipeline in real time with live per-URL status.

IndexNow only lets the site owner submit URLs for their own verified domain. So you can IndexNow your own pages — but you cannot IndexNow a backlink sitting on someone else's site, because you can't host a key on a domain you don't control. That is the same wall Google Search Console hits. The fix is a tool that dispatches a legitimate Bing crawl signal for any public URL, including third-party backlinks. See the full playbook: how to index backlinks on Bing.

Bottom line

IndexNow is the fastest way to get pages into Bing, Yandex, Seznam and Naver — but not Google, and not third-party backlinks on its own. For your own sites it's a no-brainer; for backlinks and for covering Google too, pair it with a crawl-signal indexer. IndexMyLink does both from one dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

What is IndexNow in one sentence?

A free open protocol that instantly tells Bing, Yandex, Seznam and Naver to crawl a new or updated URL, instead of waiting for them to find it.

Does Google support IndexNow?

No. Google tested it and did not adopt it. IndexNow only helps on Bing, Yandex, Seznam and Naver. For Google, use a separate crawl signal.

Is IndexNow safe?

Yes — it is an official protocol from the search engines themselves. You are simply notifying them of your own URLs. It only speeds discovery; it cannot force indexing of low-quality pages.

How do I use IndexNow for Bing?

Host a key file on your domain and ping the IndexNow API, or use a hosted tool like IndexMyLink that does it for you and also covers URLs you don’t own.

Can I index backlinks with IndexNow?

Not directly — you can only submit URLs on domains you own. For backlinks on other sites, use a tool that dispatches a Bing crawl signal for any URL. See our Bing backlink guide.

IndexNow vs Google Indexing API — which is better?

Different engines. IndexNow is broad (any URL, up to ~10,000/day) but Bing-side only. Google’s API is Google-only and limited to JobPosting/BroadcastEvent. Most SEOs need a general indexer for both — see the API eligibility breakdown.
